World-Famous Desert Parks to Visit During Your Next Outdoor Adventure

Deserts cover about one-third of our planet’s surface, yet they seem to be part of an entirely different world. There’s something about the mystery and beauty of vast desert landscapes that can ignite our sense of adventure – at times, it can even feel like you’re in another planet.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (Borrego Springs, California)

The picture-perfect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is one of southern California’s must-visit attractions. Covering a total area of roughly 600,000 acres, the stunning outdoor destination is considered the largest state park in California.

One of the most interesting things about Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is its history – almost every surface of its vast landscape has evidence of past human inhabitants, some of whom lived more than 6,000 years ago.

The park boasts 12 wilderness areas, over 500 miles of dirt roads, and an expansive network of hiking trails, providing numerous opportunities for unforgettable outdoor recreation. A diverse variety of flora and fauna exist within the park. Visitors may get the chance to see fascinating desert species such as the golden eagle, roadrunner, kit fox, bighorn sheep, and different types of palm, cacti, and wildflowers.

Joshua Tree National Park (Twentynine Palms, California)

Located in Southern California, Joshua Tree National Park encompasses a total area of almost 800,000 acres and is named after the Joshua trees, which are native to the park. This serene desert park provides plenty of recreational opportunities for visitors: hiking, stargazing, horseback riding, mountain biking, nature walks, camping, wildflower viewing, bird watching, and more.

Tourists will discover a truly diverse desert landscape, with dense Joshua tree forests, gigantic boulders, wide open spaces, and otherworldly canyons.

Death Valley National Park

Located near the border of California and Nevada, Desert Valley National Park sits in an area where both the Great Basin and Mojave deserts meet. It’s a 3.4-million acre haven for outdoor, with a stunning variety of historic sites, breathtaking terrain, and plants and animals for visitors to discover.

One of the best activities to enjoy is backpacking. Death Valley National Park offers a unique opportunity for backpackers to experience solitude as they admire gorgeous breathtaking vistas, starry night skies, and stunning geology. The park features several established trails, but the more adventurous types can traverse through open desert washes, canyon bottoms, alluvial fans, and old dirt roads to explore the area.

The park only allows overnight groups with a maximum of 12 visitors and four vehicles. Larger groups will need to occupy camps that are at least half a mile apart.
